Sadly this post has lost most of its relevance with Gonzo's disappearance but I thought I'd publish it anyway. Gonzo and I would discuss our fears and I share them with you here.
Mine:
Completing the trip is not one, giving it a red-hot go is.
The SW corner of NZ especially. The cold compounds the issues we may face down there!

Gonzo's:
Orca whales. About 18 months ago a humpback calf was separated from its mother and found its way into some protected waters in the north of Sydney known as Pittwater. It was observed cuddling up to the hulls of moored yachts and scientists suggested this was a natural instinct and imitated its actions during its suckling period i.e. the hulls of the boats suggested to the calf, its mother. Sadly it was to pass away.
Now Gonzo has heard, rightly or wrongly that Orca's are amorous creatures, and with the sexy lines of the kayak and the likelihood of encountering these animals on our trip, he is concerned about what might happen if a Orca takes a fancy to us! I in response, have suggested to him that he advise the offending animal that he is simply not in the mood, and that he should simply roll over.
